After 13 years of dedicated leadership, Principal Chuck Rittenhouse will be retiring from Springfield Township High School. Dr. Rittenhouse first arrived at STHS on July 1, 2013, bringing with him extensive experience in education and school administration. During his time at STHS, he helped guide the school through years of academic growth, community involvement, and countless milestones for students and staff. As he prepares to step down, the school community reflects on more than a decade of commitment and leadership.
A Career in Education
Dr. Rittenhouse, or “Dr. Ritt,” as many Spartans know him, previously served as principal of Upper Dublin High School for 12 years before joining Springfield Township. Prior to that, he worked as a principal and dean of students at Sun Valley High School for five years after beginning his career in education as a Social Studies teacher at Mount Saint Joseph Academy. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in United States History from Shippensburg University, a Master of Arts in Education from La Salle University, and a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Temple University.
History, Family, and a Lasting Legacy
Beyond the extensive professional accomplishments Dr. Ritt has achieved throughout his career, he credits his underlying motivation to his “love for history.” He explained that he “initially went into business for a few years,” but eventually returned to education after realizing, “Hey, why don’t I go back to doing what I love. I just love history.”
His passion for education also extends to his family. Dr. Ritt shared that he has been “blessed to have the opportunity to be the principal when [his] three sons were here.” When asked what advice he would give to the next principal, he said, “Celebrate the wins. Manage your time. Take care of yourself, and realize you have the greatest job around.”
As he prepares for retirement, Dr. Ritt reflected that he feels “so blessed to be able to be at this school and work so closely with outstanding staff and students,” adding that he has looked forward to coming to work every day.
More Than Just a Principal
During his time at Springfield Township High School, Dr. Ritt became a familiar presence throughout the building and at school events. From sporting events and performances to everyday moments in the hallways, he made an effort to stay connected with students and staff.
His leadership helped foster a strong sense of community among Spartans. As sophomore Jonah Hiestand shared, “Dr. Ritt made STHS feel like more than just a school. He helped make it feel like a community.” That sense of connection was something many students noticed, creating an environment where people felt comfortable, supported, and proud to be part of the school.
Another sophomore, Jake Bauman, reflected on his dedication, saying, “He always made time for students, no matter how busy he was. That’s something not every principal does, and it really showed his dedication.” Moments like quick conversations in the hallway or his presence at events left a lasting impression on students.
Even those who didn’t interact with him directly recognized his impact, with junior Luke Belles explaining, “Even if you didn’t know him personally, you knew who he was, and you knew he cared about the school.” This widespread respect highlighted the positive culture he helped build over the years.
Many students and teachers will remember the encouragement and support he brought to the school each day. Congratulations to Dr. Ritt on 13 wonderful years as our principal and a superb career in education altogether.
