With the summer weather approaching, who doesn’t love to get out in the sun? While the outdoors are an excellent way to get Vitamin D, it also provides opportunities for numerous activities that can be done through nature, many of which are familiar with the students at Springfield.
Competitive Activities
Mountain biking has proven to be a popular outdoor activity among the students, especially from a

competitive angle. The So-Mont mountain biking team seems to have created many shared experiences at Springfield. Regarding this team, senior Jakob Klein described how this team operated, commenting, “We would do a bunch of teams in Pennsylvania, and for some of the races you would drive like five hours. There were also MASS races which are just random people.” In similarity to Klein, freshman Timothy Houser also has experience with So-Mont. “It has been really fun, I have made lots of friends,” Houser remarks, emphasizing the benefits of participating in this competitive outdoor activity. These reports suggest that people can expose themselves to nature through clubs and competitions such as SoMont mountain biking.
Outdoor Hobbies
Clubs are not the only way that students get out into the sun. Some do it just for the joy of experiencing the outdoors in nice weather. For sophomore Adrian Archdekin, connecting to nature and the outdoors is a fun and casual activity.

“I wheelie, go around town, I go to Plymouth Whitemarsh, and on Saturdays I’ll go up to Collegeville and ride with friends there,” he reports. Archdekin also enjoys skateboarding in other environments outside of Montgomery County. Kansas City is a go-to spot for him, as he recalls that there are “a lot of smooth new skate parks and a huge skate community there.” This highlights the variety of nature and outdoor activities that can be conducted outside of our township.
Bonding Experiences Through Nature
Likewise, sophomore Charlotte Jauss describes the joy she gets out of hiking with her family. “We used to go up to a trail every Sunday and hike for, like, two hours,” shares Jauss. “I really like it because it’s a good way to connect with nature and my family.” This is one of the great benefits of sharing outdoor activities with others, as it provides opportunities for bonding that enhance the experience of connecting with nature.

There are numerous opportunities that nature brings to the students of Springfield, whether it’s competitive
, just for fun and travel, or a bonding experience. These activities come in many forms but the refreshing connection with nature remains the same.
