With people starting to listen to Christmas music in the early fall and Christmas lights being put on houses before Thanksgiving, many have differing opinions on when to start celebrating the holidays and when is too early. The Chronicle interviewed students around the school, asking when they think Christmas festivities should start.
Acknowledging the Turkey

Most Spartans agree that Christmas celebrations should commence after Thanksgiving, and there are multiple reasons why. Many students want to make sure Thanksgiving is acknowledged. Senior, Paula Daubon believes that “you have to celebrate all of the holidays equally” and “you can’t just celebrate Christmas all year.” Sophomores Stevan Turtureja and Katie Carr agree with Daubon’s reasoning. Turtureja adds on that “we should start celebrating Christmas after Thanksgiving because each holiday needs its own time.” At the same time, Carr reveals that “Thanksgiving is [her] favorite holiday and [she doesn’t] want the season of Thanksgiving to be too short.” Though she agrees with Turtureja and Carr, sophomore Bella Nguyen is ready to get into the holiday spirit. To ensure that “Thanksgiving still gets its chance,” she starts celebrating Christmas “right after Thanksgiving” since it’s “the next [holiday] in line.”

Students are also concerned with a lengthy Christmas season. Senior, Sienna DePaul and junior, Chloe Huenke both start getting festive the day after Thanksgiving. For DePaul, “Halloween technically isn’t over for [her]” until Thanksgiving ends. Huenke doesn’t want life to be “Christmas-ified for too long,” so the day after Thanksgiving is “when [she gets her] Christmas tree every year.” Senior, Ella DiFranco’s timeline aligns with Huenke’s, she starts “setting up all of [her] decorations” the weekend after Thanksgiving, so [she’s] ready before December starts and [she] can do the countdown.” Junior, Anne Metz wants to “to match the winter and Christmas season,” so she starts decorating after Thanksgiving, but overall believes that “you can celebrate Christmas all year round!”

It’s That Time of Year
Though there are many who believe Christmas celebrations should start right after Thanksgiving, some students believe that Christmas should begin in the month of December. Senior, Keegan Hurley, gets “into the musical spirit and [he starts] playing Christmas music” on December 1st. Sophomore, Kory Rodriguez wants to make sure she has enough time to “sleep off Thanksgiving,” so she starts her celebrations a bit later than Hurley, “about a week after December starts.”
From Frightful Screams to Holiday Dreams

Some students even start celebrating the holidays before Thanksgiving. Sophomore Elliot Midha summons his festive spirit by listening to Christmas music after Halloween since “there’s not really any good Thanksgiving songs.” Senior, Carlos Rivera gets “all [of his] Christmas stuff out” and “show[s] that holiday spirit” when Spirit Halloween closes because “You don’t get Thanksgiving stuff at Home Depot or anywhere.”
Overall, the majority of the interviewed Spartans believe that Christmas should start being celebrated sometime after Thanksgiving to ensure that all holidays are acknowledged, and so the festive season doesn’t stretch out for too long. Everyone is full of Christmas spirit and ready for the holiday season!
