Springfield is a tiny community, and a host of many small businesses and food joints. Places like Oreland Pizza and Cosimo’s Pizza Cafe are household names and go-tos for nights in, large events, and even an occasional class party. But, do Spartans have a favorite?
According to a pizza tasting The Chronicle hosted during lunch, the verdict is in.

Student thoughts on Oreland Pizza
Junior, Emmett Lacy:
I noticed you ate that pizza very fast.
“Yeah it was pretty good.”
Have you had it before?
“Yeah Oreland pizza’s like the classic pizza joint. I think it has everything right but what makes it an 8/10 for me is that it doesn’t have anything special, you know?”
What would make it special?
“Like maybe a special crust, something that makes it interesting.”
Junior, Patrick Fecak:
What are your thoughts on the Oreland slice?
“It’s classic, you know? It’s pretty good pizza, like it feels well rounded.”
Have you had it before this?
“Of course. I have it often and I’m sure a lot of people from Springfield can relate.”
Senior, Stella Pratowski:
“I like the pizza, it’s a pretty good consistency, although it could use a little less cheese”
Have you had it before?
“Yes, I have it a lot.”
Senior, Cody Natali:
“The crust is simultaneously ethereal and resilient, achieving that paradoxical state of being both airy and substantial, while the sauce erupts with a rich, herbaceous complexity that borders on intoxicating. The cheese melts into a velvety crescendo of savory magnificence.”
Freshman, Colin Shane:
“Oreland has really good pizza”
Student thoughts on Cosimo’s Pizza Cafe
Freshman, Zach Miller:
What are your thoughts on Cosimos?
“I mean it’s Cosimo’s, it’s messy, it’s well-cheesed.”
Freshman, Danny Guicheteau:
Thoughts on Cosimo’s?
“The sauce is really, like, different than a normal pizza.”
Junior, Emmett Lacy:
“The extra amount [of sauce] compared to Oreland Pizza’s is what sets it a little higher on the rating scale” (refrencing Cosimos)
“A for excellent sauce”
Comparison and Take-aways
Junior, Patrick Fecak:
“You know Cosimos, it’s a little bit different because I feel like Cosimo’s its got the sweet sauce, the cheese isn’t as prevalent as Orelands, where as Oreland you know I feel like anytime, anywhere, cold, hot, you can get it, but Cosimos it feels a little bit more specialized, but I think at the end of the day Im going to have to go with Oreland”
Senior, Cody Natali:
Thoughts on the crust ratio at each place?

“I actually think that Cosimo’s crust ratio is better, it’s a puffier crust, but Oreland, over all, is a little better. It did lack that super doughy crust I like, I don’t like a super crispy crust.”
Junior, Jude Slowik:
“I think I’m going to have to go with Cosimo’s just because the sweeter taste with the better dough makes up for it not having as much cheese, and even though it’s a little more messy, i feel like when I eat it, it gets a little more of like a pop in my head.”
Senior, Stella Pratowski:
“I think the Cosimos pizza was better… the Oreland pizza, the cheese… was a little to much and sometimes came apart, so I think Cosimos was just better.”
Freshman, Alicia Vernick:
Thoughts on Oreland vs. Cosimo’s?
“Cosimo’s is too saucy and messy, and Oreland tastes really good.”
The Verdict…
According to our taste-testers, there’s a clear winner. Cody Natali puts it best in his follow-up email to Chronicle writers: “Oreland Pizza yet again reigns triumphant…to consume Oreland Pizza is not merely to eat, no no, it is to ascend, to bask in edible divinity, and to realize that all other pizza is merely a pale, inferior simulacrum.”
