Good Captains are essential to success and often set the tone for the team, both on the field in-game and in practice. They keep everyone focused during adversity and ensure the team stays united. In all kinds of sports, captains and leaders are some of the most vital and important pieces to success.
Coach’s Perspective
Effective captains communicate with coaches and teammates to positively affect everyone. They often exemplify effort, responsibility, and consistency. Their influence extends beyond the field, shaping teammates’ behavior in school and in the community. Coach Meder explained, “We look for guys that lead from the front, that aren’t trying to be leaders, they are guys that are doing the right thing at the right time all the time.” Coach Meder also says, “ Captains have to be players that are on the field and, in the face of adversity, rise beyond it time and time again.”
Player’s Perspective
Many players admire their captains for leadership and motivation. Without strong leadership, even skilled teams struggle to reach their goals. Soccer captains Roman Corcoran and Will McLaughlin shared how they were chosen: “[We] were chosen from working hard the past couple of years, working harder every day, practice, and being good role models.” They also shared what qualities it takes to be a captain, saying, “captains should have good character, shouldn’t expect anyone to do what you want them to do, and be good all-around leaders.” This is essential, as good captains shape the team’s culture and mindset, help new players feel welcome, and clarify the standards expected.
