Greenfield Film Festival 2023

This past April, the Digital Storytelling and Storytelling Through Film classes, taught by Marlene and Mr. Meder, attended the Greenfield Youth Film Festival at Upper Dublin High School. Both classes center around creating short films – six minutes or less – to submit to the festival. This year, each student submitted at least one film to the festival, many of which were nominated for multiple awards. Springfield gathered a fair share of success at the 2023 Greenfield Youth Film Festival, leaving a lasting impression that will definitely hold over until the school’s return in 2024.

Two STHS films won big at this year’s festival. Veronica Rammon-Murray’s film The Valley won best screenplay and was also nominated for best narrative, funniest film, best producer, and best acting. Arianna Pepe’s documentary, Service For the Community, won 3rd place overall for documentaries and featured teen workers at Cradles to Crayons. The film was also nominated for best PSA, best producer, and best cinematography.

Other honors included:

  • Anna Wojek’s film Gone Too Soon was nominated for best narrative and best screenplay.
  •  Ezra Bustos’s movie Groovy Street was nominated for the funniest film, most creativity and original content.
  • Timothy Schugsta’s documentary, More Than a Hero, told the story of Tim’s great-grandfather, who fought in World War Two. Tim’s film earned two nominations: best use of a Teacher and best use of a historical archive.
  • Leo Dean’s movie SRI was a mockumentary on the struggles of senioritis and was nominated for the funniest film.
  • Sam Klein’s documentary Tackling Tech Week was nominated for best editing, use of a teacher, and video diary.
  • Gabe Fluehr’s documentary The Setback, which followed Springfield’s soccer team through their journey to the state championships, was nominated for best documentary, best sports highlight, and best cinematography.

All of Springfield’s film students made incredible movies that were recognized and praised by Greenfield judges. If you or anyone you know is interested in making a Greenfield film, sign up for a film class and talk to Marlene and Mr. Meder.

 Congratulations, Spartans!
