Our New High School Librarian

Our new school year has brought a new, but familiar face, to our library. Former English teacher Mrs. Edelmayer has taken up residence as our newest high school librarian. As we move into the second semester of this 2022-2023 school year, our library is and will continue to see a lot of big changes.

When Mrs. Edelmayer first heard our school would be in need of a new librarian, she decided to take a chance at this new role in our school community. “I have always liked the idea of being able to work with more students and be helpful to the school as a whole,” says Mrs. Edelmayer, and being the librarian gives her the perfect opportunity to do so.

“As a librarian, I get to be on the positive side of learning,” helping students with projects and not having to critique and grade them has been a newfound joy for Mrs. Edelmayer. Enter the library on any given day and you may notice that it is abuzz with students from all different classes working on some sort of project. In recent weeks, Mrs. Edelmayer has assisted Mr. Gershman’s Senior International Lit students with Lord of the Flies mosaics, and Mr. Shelly’s Freshman US History I students with a board game project.

Mrs. Edelmayer has big plans for how she will change the library. With a list of general upkeep and physical changes, a notable few are flexible seating options, eliminating old books to take out more shelves, and a new paint job. With the freedom to “spend the budget however [she] needs,” Mrs. Edelmayer is excited to see how many of these changes she can make throughout the rest of the school year.

Outside of just physical changes, Mrs. Edelmayer’s main goal is to “make the library relevant.” While the library is and has always been a place to find and read books, Mrs. Edelmayer hopes to open its doors to a more diverse group of students through various interactive activities. By having the “World Cup board” throughout November and December, the library became a gathering place for a “different group of kids,” giving them a place to express their interests and have fun during our lunch and learn block. Also during lunch and learn, you can find students completing puzzles, studying, and in recent weeks hosting chess tournaments. “I want all students to feel welcome and safe here,” said Mrs. Edelmayer, “not just kids who like books.”
