As a school, our students and teachers have worked hard to showcase our great talent continuously. Namely, the creative writing club is proudly leading the way in representing the creativity we have to offer.
The Literary Magazine: A Compilation of Springfield Works
With the idea of starting a literary magazine, the creative writing club was formed in the spring of 2023 by Nell Matthews in her freshman year. “The process was really difficult… I had to do a lot of emailing, a lot of tracking down,” says Nell Matthews, the president of the club, “but eventually I made it happen.”
The literary magazine, now advised by Mrs. Fracassini, is now not just an idea but a work in progress. It will be a compilation of writing and artwork from the year, not just from students at the high school but also from the elementary and middle school. It can be personal work, school work, or anything.
This year’s theme will be “New Beginnings,” which will change yearly. However, Matthews notes that writing or art can be in any style, as the literary magazine’s goal is to design an artistic platform where students can submit their work. “It’s helpful to have a creative outlet in school because it may be difficult to get creative and fun classes if your schedule is stacked with academics,” says Nell.
As students submit their work, the design team of six students (Annie Wolkenberg, Charlotte Jauss, Ella DePasquale, Evelyn Johnson, Lilianna Covington, and Nell Matthews) work to lay it out in Canva. They meticulously outline the book in a way that fits the theme while also piecing all of the works together in a meaningful way. At the end of the year, it will be printed and made into a book.
