Summer is officially over, classes started, and students are now diving into extracurricular activities. Springfield has a diverse student body with different likes, hobbies, and interests. The STHS chronicle interviewed students at the STHS Activities Fair to check in on the student body and see what they did this summer, how they liked their new classes, and what clubs at the fair caught their interest.
What was your favorite thing you did this summer?
Summer has surely drifted away with the beginning of the academic year; however, we wanted to know what students were up to over the break. When talking to students, many seemed to have a lot of fun during the summer months doing various activities. Students seemed to enjoy traveling, like junior Madeline Lodge, junior, who went “backpacking in Washington with a bunch of teenagers that [she] had just met,” and freshman Colleen Colville, who went to “[her] cousin’s house a lot on the water.” While some may have traveled throughout the summer, a lot of the summer is spent in our hometown for students. Sophomore Tenzin Chukey remarked that her favorite part of summer was simply “sleeping in” – something most students definitely relate to. Whether it was traveling, being comfy at home, playing sports, or hanging out with friends, the student body at Springfield had a well-spent summer.
After spending a few weeks in school, what has been your favorite class and why?
A new school year means new classes, and because of the wide variety of classes at the high school, students have very different choices for what class could be their favorite. Colville really likes ELA because “[she] likes the stuff [they] are doing, and the teacher is nice.” While some students enjoy the academic aspects of their classes, others, like junior Joanna Ye, appreciate their classes for different reasons. Ye says, “I love Calculus because the people in the class are really funny.” Some elective courses have also been favorites–for Lodge, her favorite class “has to be Fibers and Designs; it is such a relaxing and peaceful class.” Because many classes with different skills and objectives, students can find a variety of interests, and many students find joy in at least one of their classes.
What club at the Activities Fair has sparked your interest in joining and why?
The start of the school year and the arrival of new students means the opportunity to join new clubs at STHS. Various clubs offer arts, finance, government, volunteer opportunities, safe spaces, stepping, and everything in between. To allow students to see all the clubs they can join, the high school holds an activities fair at the beginning of every year. Held in the cafeteria throughout lunch and learn, clubs set up posters and sometimes even treats to promote and explain their club to try and get new members. Most students found at least one club they thought they would enjoy. For freshman Web Anancnus, he was interested in Youth and Government because “[he] likes debating.” Sophia Perez, a freshman, said she was interested in Unicef because “it seems like a really good opportunity” and she hopes it will “connect [her] with the community.” For some students, while they joined new clubs, they also made new clubs. Ye, made her own club, Women Supporting Women, and told people to “Go Join!” Aside from the mentioned clubs, the Activities Fair had a variety of clubs offering robotics, writing, arts, finance, and much more.
The school’s goal is always to have more people getting involved in more things, and at the Activities Fair this year, there were many STHS clubs for students to be excited about.
